The Size of a Man                                      [return to devotional list]

"There was the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath"

(1 Sam. 17:23)

The size of a man is not determined by the size of his body, the size of his brain or the size of his wallet. When the Israelites clamored for a king, they chose Saul because he was tall and handsome. But eventually God rejected Saul because he wasn't the right size.

The size of a man is determined by the size of his faith. In every ambition of life, one must have faith in himself. To be successful, one must also have faith in his teammates. What we believe about ourselves and the people we work with, the people we serve with and the people we live with determines the measure of our victory.

The size of a man is determined by the size of his adversaries. Great victories are won by great men. But great men are made encountering great opponents - and then defeating them. Champions become champions by defeating champions. Without great opposition, there is no great victory. David garnered a great name for himself after he defeated Goliath. Before that, he was simply a shepherd boy.

The size of a man is determined by the size of his God. It is not enough to have faith in yourself and your team. You must have faith in the one true God. When the Philistine drew near to David, he cursed David by his gods. But David responded by declaring, "You come to me with a sword... but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts" (17:45).

The greater the faith, the greater the victory. The greater the opposition, the greater the victor. Call on the name of the Lord and tackle your opponent head-on!
