The Power of Spirit-Led Preaching        [return to devotional list]

"And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,"

(1 Corinthians 2:4)

The wise and useful preacher knows the mind of man is not renewed by debate, but by declaration. We are called to preach, to declare and to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There are times to explain the Gospel, but God has commanded that we preach - we must proclaim the Gospel. Yet even when we explain and teach the Gospel, it is never to be argued but rather to be accepted.

The wise and useful preacher does not preach to other preachers or to his fellow ministry students. He preaches to people in the throes of life who are longing for a word from God. We are called to preach to everyday people living everyday lives with everyday language. The temptation to elevate message with superior terminology and lofty vocabulary cheats the hearer of full comprehension and deep conviction. It is one thing to communicate the Gospel. It is another thing to communicate it in a way that people understand.

The wise and useful preacher does not simply preach. He demonstrates. Miracles silence the critics. No one can debate miracles. No one can accuse the preacher of speaking nonsense or speaking above their intellect. There it is!

God said, "preach" and I will back you up. Rest in this knowledge as you minister. And expect God to perform the miraculous as you preach.
